The Mighty Nein Origins: Fjord Stone was scheduled for publication by Dark Horse Comics, with a Jrelease for book retailers and digital platforms and a Jrelease for comic shops. Outside the town he encountered Jester Lavorre, who was fleeing it and invited him to join her.īack in the present with the Mighty Nein aboard the sunken Tide's Breath, Fjord noted that he was still seeking answers to what had happened, but at least was no longer alone. Fjord then investigated Nicodranas, since it was the next largest port. Fjord searched for Sabian but he had apparently left Port Damali. When he visited Vandran's office, it had been recently ransacked, apparently by Sabian.

He discovered that the sword allowed him to change his appearance and evade the pursuers. When he attempted to find other surviving crew members in Port Damali, he was regarded with suspicion since it was known that the Tide's Breath had been sabotaged, and pursued by a mob. It seemed to call to him and he picked it up, learning that it could somehow also help him influence others to his will. He remembered nothing else until he awoke alone on a beach, healed, and a mysterious sword lying next to him. Fjord tried to warn the crew to abandon ship, but there was a massive explosion and he was thrown overboard. He saw Sabian light a fuse and attempted to stop him, but Sabian evaded him and jumped overboard. During the efforts of the crew to secure the ship, Fjord noticed Sabian scurry bellowdecks carrying something, and, suspicious, followed him. Soon afterwards, the Tide's Breath encountered a bad storm. He refused, however, to explain what it was. Over time, Fjord's skill grew until he was on the verge of defeating his captain, when Vandran for the first time used magic against him. One night, Vandran called him to his cabin and began training him in the use of a sword. Fjord found himself fitting in, and was promoted several times over the course of years. Vandran met secretly with Fjord and taught him to study the behavior of others, to mimic it in order to blend in, and to mask his vulnerabilities. Vandran insisted on the promotion and offered to help him learn to call less attention to himself. At one point, Vandran called Fjord into his office and promoted him, although Fjord protested he just wanted to blend in.

Sabian stopped openly harassing him although Fjord suspected he was responsible for occasional dirty tricks or sabotage. Vandran treated Fjord with respect and taught him to respect himself, although the work was hard. When Fjord was seventeen years old, Vandran visited the orphanage to recruit sailors and hired both Fjord and Sabian to join his crew. It was then that he began filing down his tusks to appear more "normal". He worked in the wood shop of the Driftwood Asylum but was clumsy, and the abuse and bullying by other boys increased until he was attacked and beaten by them one night. He was abused by their cruel caretaker Grankton for finding only pewter rather than gold, and by the other boys (including the young Sabian) for being a half-orc. Twenty years earlier in Port Damali, Fjord was part of a group of teen-aged boys diving for treasure from wrecks off the coast. The Mighty Nein are exploring the wreck of the Tide's Breath on the ocean floor, causing Fjord to remember his past.
